A Rust Index Fund on SCMM tracks the average price performance of a specific category of Rust skins over time, measured as a single value, similar to how a stock market index tracks a basket of shares. Instead of checking every weapon skin individually, the Weapons Index (RS.WPN) gives you one number that reflects how that entire category is moving.
Each index tracks the average price movement of all items in that category, weighted by market cap. Supply is held fixed at the most recent day’s across every comparison, so an index moves only when prices move — not when our estimate of how many copies exist changes. The published level is that basket’s cap-weighted average skin price on the latest day we have data for.
SCMM is still building its index catalogue.
The Rust Market Cap shows the total combined value of every Rust skin listed across all tracked marketplaces — it is one number representing the entire Rust skin economy. The Index Funds break that economy into categories, so you can see whether weapons are outperforming clothing, or whether crates are rising while backpacks fall. Market Cap tells you the size of the market; Index Funds tell you which parts of it are moving.
